Tandem Sky is the indie dance/electronica project from Stockholm based producer and DJ Tiger Stripes, who with Tandem Sky lead singer Magnus Carlson has covered one of their all time favourite songs, ‘Solid Air’ by legendary Scottish singer and songwriter John Martyn.

The Main mix is a belter of a club tune, perfectly crafted in every way making the song sound like it was made to dance to all those years ago, complete with electric guitars and a pounding kick drum, and with the trademark melodic themes of tiger Stripes giving maximum impact to that amazing vocal that effortlessly cuts through the air.

The remix is by Chicago legend Tevo Howard of Beautiful Granville Records, who stays true to the original but adds a whole new angle to it with his lush deep techno groove taking it even deeper and further underground, creating an essential anthem for the summer.

The album features some of the most highly respected names in underground electronic music, house and techno. Each piece of music is specially made for this soundtrack, which sees the producers go beyond their normal musical range, out of their comfort zone and into uncharted territory.

Imagine starting with the soundtrack and thereafter constructing your movie, following the changes in the soundtrack, making each piece of music invoke feelings that makes up the story. Music is the greatest medium of all when it comes to suggesting the tone and mood of a scene. The mood could change in an instant following a change in the music, so contrary to the normal way of adding music to film, what if you could start with the music, and then shoot the film?

With artists including Umek, Djuma Soundsystem, Tiger Stripes, diskJokke, Alain Ho, King Britt and Darko Esser we see the music twist and turn in the most unexpected way and we can only imagine what goes on parallel with the music. We can assume the listening experience is much dependent on the listener’s point of view, making the soundtrack interactive in the sense that you can change the imagery that goes with the music as you like, for every listen if you like, and make up your own story to the soundtrack as you go along.

With a few very subtle changes in the arrangement, the intensity of the track changes dramatically. The addition of his sinister sounding snares, old-school hoover-like techno stabs, changing the balance of the track towards the higher end of the frequency spectrum, leaving the beats and bassline to work away in the background, all while letting the snares and percussion do all the hard work… this is King Britt at his very best!

We caught up with King Britt to chat about his new release.

What effect did you want to create with the dramatic change in ‘Lift The Snares’?
I wanted a feeling of liftoff and a feeling of anticipated freedom from the norm, an escape through sonics

How has your style of creating music changed in the last 20 years?
With technology its made all the tools at my fingertips, literally. I’m doing so much on my iphone lately on layovers that I will have an album by the time this tour is over. It has really opened up a lot of ideas being limited to just the iphone.

But when I’m home I’m doing all analogue at the moment….so best of both worlds…..

Why did you decide to do a split EP?
I didn’t decide….just happened.

What else do you have coming up this year?
I am working on an album for Hyperdub under the Fhloston Paradigm moniker, doing an African album with Shabazz Palaces’ Tendia in Zimbabwe, a series of collaborations that will be coming out monthly starting in September and 3 more Firefly releases

Having achieved so much, in so many areas, where do you want to take your music next?
Have been working with a few visualists. I’m exploring more with video/live performance….its on!

London’s long time house pioneers X-Press 2 and Danish underground act Djuma Soundsystem started on the track back in 2011. They created one perfect riff and it became the base for the rest of the track. UK singer songwriter David Mensah provided the vocals, with Peace Division’s Justin Drake delivering a rock solid master that will have your speakers working double time just to cope.
The track also features a brilliant remix by underground phenomenon Coyu (number one on Beatport, 2009).
From the USA to Monaco, Geneva, France, Norway and Germany, David Mensah has travelled the world to perform for his fans, taking the soul charts by storm, attracting many accolades and much critical acclaim.
Mensah’s collaborations with Hip-Hop artists such as Jay Z’s right hand man Roc-a-Fella Record’s Memphis Bleek for projects with Jim Jones, Raekwon (Wu Tang), Havoc (Mobb Deep), KRS1 and Black Rob make it hard to categorise him as just another soul RnB singer.

We Grab A Few Minutes With David Mensah

How did Employee of The Year come about?

I made a dance record “Straddle Me” with Future Disciple AKA Daniel James and that led to me signing to Soundz Ltd, the same publishing company as Daniel. Since signing with Christian at Soundz, he has been great at introducing me to some amazing producers. When he mentioned X-Press 2 I was on it, I love how they work with so many amazing but different vocalists. It’s amazing to get to work with such legends in a new genre for me and I love what we came up with. For me music is about stepping out of my comfort zone and trying something new. Most people know me for my soul album, but I have made drum n bass and hiphop records and toured with a jazz band. I just love music full stop.

What inspired the songwriting?
In two words – the beat. As soon as I heard it my mind started ticking over with ideas, that’s always a good sign. The beat is kinda sexy so that’s where it took my mind.

X-Press 2 have a history of quirky vocal house numbers with mass appeal, do you think this track might lead your music into more house tracks for you?
I hope so, I love house music so it was only a matter of time before I started to make some and now that I have started I want MORE! I like so many different types of house from Funky to Soulful and everything in-between so there are so many possibilities for songs.

How do you fancy being a star in Ibiza?
I hear that they know how to party in Ibiza so it sounds like a good place to do some gigs. Where do I sign up?!

What else have you got coming up in the next few months?
I am in the studio at the moment working on some projects that should surface later this year and then back to gigging! I did quite a lot of recording last year also and some of those tracks are set to come out. As usual it covers everything from soul, Hip Hop to dance and drum n bass.

How did ‘Deeper Thoughts’ come about and what did you want to achieve with it?

SHMUEL – It was made with a different, deeper mood than the rest of our productions which are usually more happy. Its dedicated from us in memory of our Father R.I.P. We started off with calmed strings pads then flowed building the tune around them, and included an effected female vocal saying “What am I thinking” which we reverbed. It all adds up to a feel good, deep thinking kind of track.

What do you think Tiger Stripes’ mix brings to the track?

SHMUEL – We were really happy that Tiger Stripes remixed it, as we all support his recent stuff and really like what he did on ‘Deeper Thoughts’. His version has a funkier vibe, especially with the new bassline he created and few other elements that are really cool and fun to hear on the dancefloor.

Tell us more about the F3 project, where it is right now and what you have planned.

SHMUEL – F3 is our alias project that we started less than a year ago (mid 2011), deciding it will represent a different sound of ours to our more known Big Room Flash Brothers style. To highlight our appreciation for more mellow electronic club music we wanted to create it between the genres of Deep House, Nu-Disco & deep techy House, with BPMs between 110-123 (when Flash Bros stuff is more between 125-139).
The F3 project is growing rapidly at the moment, having so far had 6 different tracks signed on different labels with the first released in late 2011 on Undertones Gang Records, which has just been licensed to the new ‘Winter Chill’ CD compilation on Hed Kandi. After ‘Deeper Thoughts’ we’ve got ‘Lonely Land’ coming on Club Mod, which is the new sub label of the reknowned Australian Modular Records. It features a very nice remix by John Talabot. Then one on Nurvous Records (Nervous Records sub-label) which is a collaboration with Swedish Deep House / Nu Disco hero Dana Bergquist, with more to come on Dutch label Silhouette and UK label Pole Position.

How does this work alongside your Flash Brothers activities?

ILAN – We try to mix the work between the 2 projects, perhaps working for 2 weeks on a Flash Brothers tune then afterwards 2 weeks on an F3 tune. But lots of times its been also like half a day on each. So far it’s worked out really well, even during our tours and travels, so we do hope to get as many new tracks as possible finished from both projects.

What have you got coming up in the next few months?

ILAN – Gig-wise we’ll be in Miami again in March, then in Israel with some holidays gigs coming up, followed by South America inc. Brazil and possibly Mexico.
Music-wise – as well as the F3 stuff, we’ve got some hot Flash Brothers releases, such as the buzzing Electro/House single ‘Glitch’ that’s out now on Sounds United label in Germany/Austria/Switzerland & forthcoming on more labels as TOP DJ Music (Scandinavia), Isolation Records (UK & Eire) & Housepital Records (Benelux/Italy/Spain). Also there’s the Big room House/Dubstep single ‘Pray With Wolves’ on Australia’s Central Station that will have some wicked remixes, plus the Prog House single ‘Broke My Heart’ on Italian dance label Loudbit Records.
Also a collaboration with US producer Gustavo Carole and female duo Honeypott which we already finished an official video clip for in Las Vegas. Look out for it!

What did you want to achieve with this follow-up single on Soundz?

To continue my exploration of Deep House. I played my latest tracks to Christian (SOUNDZ A&R) and he liked them, then I was even more happy when he said that techno legend ALAIN HO would make a remix. I want to say thanks to SOUNDZ and especially Christian Larsson. It is a pleasure to share my music with these guys because they bet on good music, for example putting out all the amazing releases from the likes of Tiger Stripes and Djuma Soundsystem.

How did the track come about & what’s the story behind the name?

Well ‘Le Loctaire’ was the evolution of the character in Polanski´s film. Dark atmosphere and sweeping and changing synths that enter into the deepest side of your mind. Then ‘Midnight In Stambul’ is tech house with organic sounds like my previous production on Soundz. I dressed it with deep touches and to have this remixed by Alain Ho gives to the whole release a very special value.

What have you got coming up in the next few months?

I´m working on lots of deep and floor tracks at the moment. I always try to take care about the sound of each of my tracks, giving them a personal style. I really like working with SOUNDZ so hope to continue to grow on the label…
